Translated by Anna Dimitriou
THE ROAD REMAINS
No matter how much I walked, I never arrived anywhere.
A golden glow falls on the yellow leaves,
Pulls them gently and throws them onto the ground.
What is the great Unity?
Where can I ask for it, how can I find it?
Behind a small wall,
Calming down as the sea calms down
Even though it contains many currents,
I listen to my bitter heart as it powerfully beats.
Only the road remains.
It remains, the loneliness and the silence of the endless road,
Which becomes lost far away in the distance.
Only the search remains, and the deep bitterness
That no one arrives anywhere.
Have the joy of the little child
As he loses himself in the air and rain,
As he runs and splashes his feet hard into the puddles.
Strive to remain simple and pure,
And let the wolves gnash their teeth around you.
I didn᾽t get anywhere no matter how much I walked.
Admiration and respect for this unspeakable wonder
Is all that remains.
A powerful wind passes through the trees,
Sweeps the peaks and scatters the birds.
The indifferent, uninvolved sky is sunk in boundless silence.
The road remains. Endless.
Disappears into the twilight.
ποῦ νὰ τὴ ζητήσω, πῶς νὰ τὴ βρῶ;
ART
The poet is one who has his eyes open.
He asks for our attention. He makes the invisible visible.
What else is art but a concentric lens that mingles
The many rays into a glow as they lie loose and scattered?
Art demands our attention.
Concentration, vigilance.
Here in the realm of beauty,
We are, at last, complete
For a while having left behind us
The daily confusion and turmoil
That for days and nights eats at our flesh.
We are complete, bright and illuminated. Disembodied.
Here, in the dominion of art,
Where beauty is tangible and immaterial at the same time.
It is as if a cool stream passed through us and revitalized us.
And all these, if we pay only a little attention with our hearts.
Our broken hearts. Life asks nothing of us
Except attention and a big heart.
And to keep our eyes open.
ὅπως κεῖνται λυτὲς καὶ σκορπισμένες;
FINE SAND
Time passes. It slips through our hands like fine sand
And is gone forever.
Since I was a child, I haven’t done anything else
But to stabilise its swift wings with the golden nails of words
To stay a little longer –
But the time flies in a moment and is gone forever.
Time passes rapidly and is lost forever.
Don᾽t let it flow away
From within your fingers like fine sand.
We are like the flame in the wind. A little it resists,
Waving and then at the end it fades away
defeated.
All tumble into the abyss and go.
Nothing remains. A generation is tearing down all that
The previous generation built with so much effort and toil.
IN BRIEF
Out on the road in the morning. The sunlight that grows stronger
as the day passes.
***
The use, he said again and again, only the use. Never abuse, never.
***
A splashing ocean: Murder of women, rape, murder
Of young children, train collisions are roughly covered
And we move on without having made even one step.
Paedophiles, pimps, humanoid monsters,
Ηags with nothing human smiling in frozen photographs.
***
Evening. A wind was blowing hard. The black branches, naked.
The headlights of automobiles fireballs of light in the dark.
On the side of the road a sparrow with broken wings, beaten,
Barely breathing. We picked it up. It didn’t live long.
I clearly remember its pained, panicked eyes.
***
Distant memories, faded. In the ravine,
Women washed the heavy covers,
Spread them on the white stones in the sun to dry.
Small children up to knee in water.
***
As the years go by, time deepens. Arcades,
Passages, branches, narrows, dangerous paths.
You go ahead astonished and get lost.
***
A cellar damp and dark. He stands in the semi–darkness,
Silent, motionless. From the small window
A little light and the lively traffic of the street.
He tries to think of nothing. Not to remember anything.
***
Young women and men on the street, talking incessantly,
Gesticulating, suffocating from too much youth.
They ignore the gold coin they hold in their hands.
They don’t know what to do with it, how to spend it
So that it is of use. They laugh out loudly, use profane words,
Obscenities and irresponsibility waste their days, their years.
***
Full moon in a winter sky. White
bright visor with few shadows. Crystal clear night.
On the road people in a hurry, cars, motorcycles.
You lift your eyes to the glittering beauty
And just for a while you rest.
***
Nothing was left of the dragon generations. Nothing.
Only dwarfs.
***
The noise like a huge glass bell covers the whole city.
Nowhere a peaceful, contemplative road.
***
Most things are forgotten.
Forgetting is stronger than memory.
***
On the road a hedgehog beaten, squashed.
Next to the muzzle, a drop of blood.
***
Heavy, leaden sky. An aging pine tree. The birds
On the branches were gathering and scattering again.
The soil was wet and fragrant after the rain.
***
A lemon tree with all the fruit in the little light
Of the lamp in a small garden with the still well
And the silence. Raindrops on the glossy leaves.
GENERATION TO GENERATION
How far do the roots of this tree reach?
Generation after generation. I don’t know anything
Except for the parents᾽ parents.
Further back, an impenetrable deep darkness.
The line is cut, the family tree remains without foliage.
And even if I knew, what would it benefit?
And the ancestors, I think, near or far,
They also would have been caught
In the human net. Same as us and yet completely different.
And one would have struggled all his life to penetrate it, to pass
To the other side, to see whatever can’t be seen with the naked eye.
Μέχρι ποῦ φτάνουν οἱ ρίζες αὐτοῦ τοῦ δέντρου;
Κι ἂν γνώριζα τί θὰ ὠφελοῦσε;
GIANT ON THE SEASHORE
They poured cement between the roots, a thick layer.
Strong roots, all health and vigour
That were losing deep in the earth.
A mighty trunk, formidable, upraised black and heavy
From within a waterfall of green light.
Its great shadow fell upon the waters, unperturbed.
A giant on the seashore.
Proud, disdainful, beautiful.
The human herd passes indifferent,
Drugged without seeing anything. The wounds,
The deep marks on the body. Names, dates,
Hearts nailed with an arrow. The big rusty nails on the trunk,
On the low branches, its hands.
Impiety and folly of man. To recognize nothing
And no one beyond self. Leaving nothing in its peace.
Not to stop before anything.
Gentle and patient by the sea, with centuries behind him.
A cedar tree.
As I looked at it, tears came to my eyes.
THE BEST
How many things do we lift on our shoulders
A whole lifetime: Houses, cars, heavy and immoveable furniture,
Appliances, machines which multiply over the years
Until in the end we kneel under their burden,
They fall on us and crush us.
Little is a lot, if you warm it with your breath.
A few things — whatever is necessary.
A table, a chair, a bed, a few books,
In the corner an empty jar, a picture of emptiness,
A few flowers, a few trees, a small yard
With a lot of space in between so quiet and silence
Can come and go without hindrance.
ΤΟ ΕΥ
A PHOTO
(Storm Thorgerson, Wish You Were Here)
One of them has snatched fire. The other looks at him
With a hard look,
All contempt and indifference.
The eyes are not visible behind the black glasses,
But he is betrayed by the posture.
They shake hands. The one is upright, robust, decisive.
The other leans lightly and the fire
Wrapped around his legs, arms, hair.
May pain grip you like a fire. You are burned,
But you are resurrected, like a phoenix.
Hopefully pain will not make you wild,
But smooth you out like the sea does the rock.
Then perhaps one day you may be able
To see the world clearly from the reverse,
The inner dark side.
(Storm Thorgerson, Wish You Were Here)
