Poems of Leda
awakening
“…how terrible to have met you so late
and to be separated like this so early”
A. Voznesenski
on the river in my palm Leda lays her breast
through my fingers passes the wind’s loneliness
I am the soul of the stones, the rain’s bemusement
I can no longer pray to a god so lately met
I can’t be anyone’s courtyard now
the unscented darkness of backyard gardens
in the wells I abandoned life relaxes
and forgets its bewilderment on my face
Leda explains herself to the water
so she’ll become the cloud-voice
that the night awaits
does earth acknowledge pain that has no one
could I enter the forests of your breasts
I should find a river
so that I can look at you
only love alarms loneliness
don’t remember me when you awaken
uyanış
ne acı bu denli geç rastlamak sana
ve böylesine erken ayrı kalmak sonunda
A. Voznesenski
avcumdaki ırmağa göğsünü yaslar Leda
parmaklarımdan geçer rüzgârın yalnızlığı
taşların ruhuyum yağmurun dalgınlığı
dua edemem artık geç kaldığım tanrıya
kimsenin avlusu olamam şimdi
arka bahçelerin kokusuz karanlığı
terk ettiğim kuyularda dinlenir hayat
yüzümde unutur şaşkınlığını
kendini sulara anlatır Leda
gecenin beklediği
bulut sesi olmak için
kimsesiz acıyı tanır mı toprak
girebilir miyim göğsündeki ormana
bir nehir bulmalıyım
bakmak için sana
yalnızlığı yalnızca aşk ürkütür
beni hatırlama uyandığında
the gaze
I am Leda:
don’t ever gaze into the waters of my transformation
inside me there’s a mirror that frightens me
I can’t stay naked now
time when it passed through my mouth was a youth
a crushed dream
of blood-drained incense
the ash’s ache runs down my shoulders
liken yourself to the fear of sleep
when I become a sea whose shadow won’t grow
the gods will love me then
perhaps the sign on my neck
could speak to the gaze outside it
bakış
ben Leda:
sakın bakma dönüştüğüm sulara
içimde korktuğum bir ayna var
çıplak kalamam şimdi
ağzımdan geçerken ergendi zaman
kanatılmış buhurdan
ezilmiş rüya
külün sancısı iner omuzlarımdan
karşılaştır kendini uykunun korkusuyla
gölgesi büyümeyen bir deniz olduğumda
tanrılar sever beni
belki de konuşur boynumdaki iz
dışardaki bakışla
forgetting
inside my mouth wanders the wind’s tongue
I asked the skylarks my name
they kissed me with a moment’s song
I can’t look at the face of Medusa now
let the weeds pardon my feet
I liked the tale sprawling over your chest
the sky that I lost in the forest
the oracle that I chased after
the word was I’d dissolved into Lethe’s breath
the sleeping stone speaks with the oak
the silence of bodies is sensed
leaves fidget
there is no branch
but a farewell forgets no one
unutuş
ağzımda dolaşır rüzgârın dili
tarlakuşlarına adımı sordum
bir anlık şarkıyla öptüler beni
Medusa’nın yüzüne bakamam şimdi
otlar bağışlasın ayaklarımı
göğsünüzde uzayan masalı sevdim
ormanda yitirdiğim gök
ardından koştuğum kâhin
karıştığım söylendi Lethe’nin soluğuna
uyuyan taş söyleşiyor meşeyle
sessizliği duyulur gövdelerin
yapraklar çırpınır
yoktur dal
oysa kimseyi unutmaz veda

my mirror fell asleep
the child understood god’s disdain
where had she dropped her icons
my sinning mother on heaven’s plains
her wet hair had been summoned
i had kissed her cheek
covering the snow fallen on her chest
with her desert voice
she never explained to me
what would come up next for me
it was forty nights’ of pain
my fairytale wedding
the tiara i dropped into the water
that kept bleeding forever
i waited. maybe the cherry bough
would touch my voice
god didn’t see
the child’s rebuke
my mirror fell asleep
aynam uyuyakaldı
tanrının küstüğünü anladı çocuk
nerde düşürmüştü ikonlarını
gökyüzünün katında günahkâr annem
çağrıldı huzura ıslak saçları
yanağını ben öpmüştüm
göğsünde yağan karı
gizlemiştim çöl sesine
içimin sonrasını
anlatmadı bana hiç
kırk gecelik acıydı
masalımın düğünü
sonsuza dek kanadı
suya düşürülen taç
bekledim. belki değer
sesime kiraz dalı
çocuğun küstüğünü
görmedi tanrı
aynam uyuyakaldı
*
a heavy dream
on awaking
i found myself enclosed in the nonbeing of a tree
my hair reached into the earth’s sighs
i looked for a window the desert wouldn’t see
daylight knew the words that shut their mouth
so they’d stay meager forever
toward the silence
i turned the nerves on my back
the glance of a bird in night’s hollows
recalled the unknown look on my face
i walked straight to the sea
my legs kissed by the waters
had come through stormy times
the wind is a slave to no one
it opens up my chest now
at times you’re nothing at all
i fall asleep
oh! the window is closed
yet it had never been opened
the gnawing of rodents dampens the dream
reaching its peak in the hollows of my eyes
solitude of the color orange
take away my nakedness. let it creep beneath a tree
let the moon break it into bits
that vultures can come to and pick at
look quietly on me and show no offense
to the me that isn’t
bring along the female eyes of mirrors
my body appears in the center of the earth
rivers flow through all i’ve forgotten
your name as it’s written will be carved in stone
grown heavier with letters
with the salt humming inside it
ağır düş
uyandığımda
kendimi bir ağacın yokluğuna sarılı buldum
saçlarım uzandı toprağın iç çekişine
çölün görmediği bir pencere aradım
ağzı kapanan sözleri tanıdı gün ışığı
hep cılız kalacaktı böyle
sessizliğe verdim
sırtımın sinirlerini
kovuklarda geceleyen o kuş bakışı
anımsadı yüzümdeki bilinmezliği
denize doğru yürüdüm
bacaklarımı öpen sular
hoyrat zamanlardan geliyorlardı
kimsenin kölesi rüzgâr
göğsümü aralıyor şimdi
hiç olmadığın zamanlarda
uykuya dalıyorum
ah! pencere kapandı
oysa açılmamıştı hiç
kemirgenlerin sesleriyle ıslanıyor düş
göz çukurlarımda birikiyor durmadan
portakal renginin yalnızlığı
çıplaklığımı götür. sürünsün bir ağacın altında
ay parçalara ayırsın onu
akbabaların toplamaya geldiği
usulca ve incitmeden bana bak
olmayan bana
getir aynaların dişi gözlerini
beliriyor gövdem tam ortasında yeryüzünün
ırmaklar akıyor unuttuğumda
oyulacak taşlara yazılmış adın
harflerle ağırlaşmış
bir tuz uğultusunda
